🦈 Why use the Shark Cage Metaphor?

The Shark Cage Metaphor is a practical and visual way to explore personal safety, healthy relationships, boundaries and individual rights.

It can be especially helpful for people with trauma, neurodivergence or disability who may have experienced difficulties recognising unsafe behaviour, understanding social expectations, communicating boundaries or trusting their own judgement.

The metaphor helps make complex relationship concepts easier to understand. Participants can learn to:

✅ Recognise warning signs in relationships
✅ Understand what respectful behaviour looks like
✅ Identify their rights and personal boundaries
✅ Practise saying “no” and speaking up
✅ Recognise safe people and sources of support
✅ Build confidence and self-advocacy
✅ Challenge unhelpful beliefs created through trauma
✅ Develop stronger protective skills for future relationships

The program uses clear, practical and accessible activities that can be adapted to different communication, learning and support needs.

The Shark Cage approach does not blame anyone for experiencing abuse or unsafe relationships. The responsibility always belongs to the person who chooses to cause harm. The aim is to strengthen each person’s knowledge, confidence, voice and ability to recognise safety.

Ascend by Blending Our Futures will be running an eight-week Shark Cage Metaphor program in Gawler, South Australia, for people aged 16 and over. Program dates will be announced soon.
